DESCRIPTION

The Dogo Argentino is an elegant, graceful, well-balanced dog. It is heavy-boned and incredibly muscular, with a large head, strong neck and deep, broad chest giving the appearance of incredible strength. The Dogo Argentino is loyal to the family, playful and intelligent; it is an excellent guardian of the home. This breed enjoys human companions and is happiest when close to its owners.

TEMPERAMENT

The Dogo Argentino is a highly intelligence, sensible and stable breed. While gentle with its family, it is ruthless with its prey and so should be considered potentially dangerous. It makes an excellent guard dog. Socialization and obedience training at an early age is a must. It does not seem to understand harsh treatment, force training or an unpleasant attitude in humans and can become stubborn when exposed to such behavior. It likes to be included in all family activities. It is good with children and loves to kiss and cuddle with those the family accepts. It is highly intelligent; it is easy to train. The Dogo Argentino is not a breed for everyone. This powerful dog needs a firm and consistent, but loving hand. Adult dogs can be aggressive with other dogs however; it does not usually provoke the confrontation. It is good with other pets if it is raised with them from puppy hood; it needs early socialization with other animals.

GROOMING

The short white coat has no undercoat. The coat is very short and thick, smooth and glossy. The single white coat is very easy to care for and has no doggy odor. Pay special attention to the nails, as they tend to grow very fast and therefore need frequent clippings. This breed is an average shedder.

HEALTH

10% are born deaf due to their white color. Other health concerns include hip dysplasia and sunburn.

EXERCISE

The mature Dogo Argentino needs regular exercise to maintain their muscle structure. They are an energetic breed when given the chance.

TRAINING

Dogos are natural heelers and respond wonderfully to positive reinforcement and motivation training. They enjoy working and pleasing their owners. On the other hand, they don\'t do well with force training and may be stubborn to a forceful attitude. They can be trained for tracking, drug detection, support dogs, police dogs, therapy dogs, search & rescue, bomb detection etc. Training should begin at puppyhood.
